How far will a press agent go for his client?
My pal Bill Grantham sent me this cutting from Variety this morning. His message to me was See how far a publicist will go for his client
I am not sure I would go this far. But hey never say never.
Neil Simon (76) underwent kidney transplant surgery Tuesday in New York. His wife, thesp Elaine Joyce told me everything went well, that he was responding satisfactorily, adding, “It’s a miracle.” The kidney donor is Simon’s longtime press agent Bill Evans (53) who is also OK. He is expected out of the hospital by week’s end, but Simon’s stay will be longer and he will remain in New York for lengthy, post-surgical attention. Evans has been Simon’s New York publicist for 28 years, having started with the campaign for Simon’s B’way-bound “California Suite” … Prior to the surgery, Simon had been undergoing dialysis for a year and a half and while he allowed it was “so debilitating,” he told me he would also work on future projects while undergoing the treatments. When I last spoke to him, at the Ahmanson in L.A., after the preem of Baz Luhrmann’s production of “La Boheme,” he talked about progress on his next play, “Waiting for Papa,” and was also thinking of reviving “Sweet Charity” … Simon was encouraged to seek the transplant when his friend (and producer) Robert Halmi (80) underwent a successful transplant six months ago. Halmi also received his kidney from a longtime friend.
