HAS MADGE GONE TOO FARRAH THIS TIME? POP STAR'S NEW IMAGE

HAS MADGE GONE TOO FARRAH THIS TIME? POP STAR’S NEW IMAGE

YOU could almost hear the cogs turning as the Madonna Machine cranked back into action yesterday. With a new single to plug, 47-year-old Madge did what she always does – get a new image.

This time it’s the Farrah Fawcett look – flicked curls tumbling around her shoulders as she arrived for a party in New York. The new big hair joins a long line of chameleon-like changes for the American star.

In the past we’ve had yoga Madonna, cowgirl Madonna, gothic Madonna, bling Ali-G style Madonna and even Lady of the Manor Madonna. But this time image is doubly important – as her latest track Hung Up will have more promotional spin than ever.

The new release, aired simultaneously on radio stations around the globe yesterday, is part of a multi-million pound marketing strategy designed to re-establish Madonna as the Queen of Pop.

It is expected to top the charts worldwide – and make her the most successful singer on the planet. Madonna is also spending an unprecedented £5million buying up TV, billboard and cinema slots for her new album Confessions On A Dancefloor, due out on November 14.

Behind the scenes her people are working flat out. And there are plenty of them in Team Madonna. PR guru Mark Borkowski said: “She’s got sound advice but even with that machine behind you you still need self-determination and confidence to make it work. “In the music industry everyone is focused on image but no-one does it quite like Madonna.” The self-styled mistress of re-invention has undoubtedly proved herself to be a stayer.

The only question is: How long can she keep ringing the changes?
