This attitude of expectant pessimism led the BBC to put on a satire dedicated to the bungled preparations for the UK-hosted Olympics in 2012. Except, of course, it turned out to be a raging success. Because when we put the effort in we’re not bad at these things. We can actually (whispers) be quite good.
But the disasters of chancers are always going to find equal footing in the hearts of the nation. As Mark Borkowski, a public relations expert, says: “When something is very poor, word of mouth travels fast, quicker than when something is good.”
