The pace of life clatters on at the speed of light
I can’t believe July has passed in a flash. Reflecting on the hustle and bustle of modern existence it’s easy to get lost in a constant cycle of digital distractions. Our minutes are meticulously scheduled, leaving no room for interruptions. However, let us take a moment to reflect on the importance of building in a margin of flexibility.
By allowing some breathing space in our daily routines, we create opportunities to connect with others on a deeper level. As the Dutch Catholic priest, theologian, and spiritual writer Henri Nouwen suggests, what may have initially seemed like interruptions can turn into meaningful moments of the day. We might welcome an unexpected visitor and share hospitality, lend a helping hand to a lost person on the street, or simply notice the beauty surrounding us.
In our pursuit of time management and productivity, we must remember the significance of balance. Without it, our lives can become unhealthy and unsustainable. It may feel counter-cultural in today’s society to leave unstructured time in our schedules, but the rewards are immeasurable.
Embracing these moments of disconnection from digital distractions grants us renewed energy and sparks our imagination. It may seem paradoxical, but these seemingly unproductive times can become our week’s most productive and fulfilling aspects. Some of my best ideas for creative campaigns came from gazing out of a train window during my daily commute.
Let us pause, disconnect from the constant flow of technology, and make room for the beauty and serendipity of life. In doing so, we open ourselves up to a world of meaningful connections and experiences.
